Chapter 14

Marea stopped trying to clean the castle. It was a waste of effort, and it just put her in view of Coal or Brendan who she was trying to avoid with even more gusto than before. Instead, she worked on her magic and spent most of her days hiding out in the kitchen, talking to Odessa who was still recovering from being poisoned and was barely able to take care of herself.

“So, what actually happened to you?” Marea asked.

“I’m a special type of fey, and it’s my job to ensure emerging witches are kept safe. They get themselves into all sorts of trouble… well, you should know, you’re always managing it. It’s a hazard of starting out as a witch.”

“What do you mean?” Marea had never realized there were other witches out there like her. All along, she’d felt different.

“Witches are, by their nature, not very strong in their early days, you see. But they’re the targets of a lot of dark magic. So many witches were dying from getting ensnared in bad things, the fey’s king decreed, about a century ago, all witches were to be given a guardian, a fey whose job it was to protect new witches until they could use their powers.”

“And you were protecting a witch?” Marea asked.

“Yes. For some reason, she was being hunted down by someone who knew exactly what would kill a fey, and they had coated their blade with arrowroot. It’s drained my power immensely to fight off the poison it caused even with the antidote.”

“And arrowroot is harmless to humans. Actually, it can cure sickness,” Marea said absently.

“Yes.”

“So, they wanted to… what? Hurt you or capture you?”

“Hurt. But I can’t figure out why.”

Marea didn’t have any insight into that, either, so, instead, she asked, “Are you my fey, too?”

Odessa frowned and shook her head. “For some reason, you don’t have one. I don’t know if it’s because you’re in this castle which exists outside the physical plane, or if it’s because you’re advancing so quickly, but you weren’t assigned anyone. I only chanced upon you when we first met.”

Marea snorted. “That’s pretty typical of my life, isn’t it? Every other witch gets a fey, and I get trapped in a castle and bound to two sadistic beasts with only my mother’s protection magic to keep me safe.”

“Your mother’s… what?” Odessa tried to sit up, winced, then lay back down again.

“I don’t really know all the details, but there’s some strong protection magic on me, I’m almost certain it was my mother—I don’t exactly know many witches—and it stops the beasts from noticing me unless I’m right in front of them.” She had been trying to learn the beasts’ routines to ensure she avoided them, but all she had learned so far was how unpredictable they were.

“Interesting. I wonder if that same magic is why you don’t have a fey. Perhaps they didn’t know you existed. If I was your fey, I wouldn’t keep disappearing to help other people.”

Marea was
